So bragging about being top dog hasn't exactly been possible for me. However, you are totally correct, in that (unless you are a Rogue, for example), getting the boss down is not just about doing damage, it is about synergy, about providing buffs for your fellows, and debuffs for your enemies. The damage meter spammers will never understand that. It is even funnier when levelling, and someone 3 levels higher than you starts spamming the damage meter every mana break in a 5 man instance. So bragging about being top dog hasn’t exactly been possible for me.

It can be a great tool for self-improvement. One of the easiest ways to get an idea of how you're performing in a raid is this: 1. You should know about where your DPS should stand on average. Most people have at least a ballpark idea of their average (just not if it is where it is supposed to be). 2. The most important stat for a DPS class in any fight isn't the "DPS" but the "Damage Done". Mobs don't die from DPS, they die from damage actually being done to them. If you look at things this way, then in an "ideal" raid where everyone is performing perfectly, your gear and skill will naturally limit you to a certain DPS (the one you're used to seeing). If everyone is doing "their best", then the Damage Done rankings should equal the DPS rankings. If they don't, there are probably reasons for this. People could have died early, moved around a lot, or just not performed optimally. To me, keeping an eye on this comparison can let you know real quck if something major is wrong. If you're topping the DPS but 10th on the Damage Done, you're just not focusing your DPS enough for whatever reason. If your damage done out ranks your DPS, then you would appear to be doing your part (better than some others). Again, this is for self-improvement, not bragging rights!
